AU: Strawberry glut pushes prices down
Strawberry growers are facing yet another case of oversupply.
As some of the best production in years is harvested across south-east Queensland, it's driving prices down.
The good news for consumers is that not only is the fruit cheap, but timely rain earlier in the year means the quality is good.
President of the Queensland Strawberry Growers Association, Bill Sharpe, says growers may need to reconsider introducing a marketing levy and improve taste to boost demand.
«I mean there's nothing worse than a green mango or a green peach, or a green pear or whatever, anything picked green, it doesn't have the same flavour," he says.
«If you can pick it sort of ripe, the sugar levels are just way higher.
«So that's what we've been working on for the past 12 months."
